I grew up interested in snakes and other reptiles, fascinated by the different colorations of the many species. The riddles “Red touching black is a friend of Jack” and “Red touching yellow kills a fellow” often rang through my head. This inspired Mistaken Identity and gave me the chance to illustrate these beautiful creatures.

Cover

Each illustration started as a physical sketch, which was then brought into Adobe Fresco to digitize, and was lastly digitally watercolor painted.

The illustration on the cover intertwines the two snake pairings I researched for the field guide. The colorful Eastern Coral Snake and the neutral-toned Cottonmouth snake are twisted around a branch and look ready for their next meals.

Interior Spreads

A front cover and two full page spreads were created for this project.

My own handwritten “field notes” were included to give the book a more personal feel. The informative type paired with notes and drawings makes for an interesting field guide.

This field guide was created after initially being designed as a deskto pand mobile website. I chose to create this accompanying field guide after developing additional illustrations.
